**Library Workshops for Students**
THE ORANGE COAST COLLEGE LIBRARY
Comprised of over 100,000 titles of books, periodicals, videos, and audiocassettes, the Orange Coast College Library supports and enriches the quality of the educational program. The new library, opened on January 3, 2008, is located on the west side of the campus near the Lewis Science Building, the Arts Pavilion, and Starbucks. The hours during fall and spring semesters are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; Saturday from 10:00 to 3:00 p.m.; and Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. The hours vary during the summer and winter intersessions. The library is closed on all school holidays.
Remote access to the library's on-line catalog and full-text databases is available on our website. An OCC student ID card or a library card is required to check out library materials. Circulating books may be checked out for a three week period. They may be renewed once, if not on hold, for an additional three week period. All library materials are due by the end of the semester or session. Reference materials, magazines, journals, and newspapers may not be checked out.
Reserve material will be found at the circulation desk and may be checked out for a limited time, usually two hours. The reserve collection includes a textbook collection for the students, funded by the OCC Foundation, with a generous bequest from a former OCC faculty member, Shirley Brooke. Students may use a textbook in this growing reserve collection for two hours in the library.
Fines vary depending on if the material is a reserve item, a circulating book, or a media item. Library materials may be returned in the book bin on the left side of the library's front doors. Materials not found in our library may, in some cases, be requested by students from libraries in the Cal-West Consortium and by faculty from libraries throughout the United States. Inquire at the reference desk.
Our media/computer lab department provides instructional videos and DVDs, audiocassettes, Coastline College telecourses, language tapes, and a computer lab with access to the Internet and software for word processing, graphics, and other programs. Media reserves may be viewed in the library or checked out for various times. Media items may not be renewed or put on hold. A film rental card is required to check out all Film 100 and Film 104 reserves.
The library offers a variety of ways for students to study in the library, including open areas, lounge areas, and individual carrels, as well as group study rooms, and a large open study area. To book one of the group study rooms, inquire at the circulation counter.
Our reference librarians are here to teach and guide you in using the numerous print and computer based indexes provided by the library. The library offers workshops for students and lectures for classes to learn how to research library and information resources, provides Research Guides and instructional handouts, and also offers a transferable one-unit class (ENG 108, Library & Information Research) designed to develop library and information research skills.
Exciting things are happening in the library. Check out our news and events. Mission Statement
The general purpose of the Orange Coast College library is to support and complement the college mission of promoting student success by providing a wide range of basic to in-depth resource materials, library instruction, and encouragement of lifelong learning. At the same time, the library staff serves as a central and vital link for the informational and enrichment needs of all campus personnel.
The library maintains a print and non-print collection of resources built around the college curriculum. The library maintains a collection of best sellers for the enrichment of staff, students and community users. We provide photocopiers, typewriters, and a computer lab to allow students to perform more effectively. To help develop the library skills of our students, the librarians provide library orientations to classes as well as offer a one unit transferable self-paced course, Eng. 108. The library further helps students, faculty and staff by providing reference service. The library offers a comfortable environment in which to study or do class assignments. Inter-library loan is available to give access to hard-to-find materials.
The Orange Coast College library primarily serves the students, faculty and staff of the college. Beyond our primary mission, we serve all district personnel, as well as students from GWC and CCC. Our inter-district library automation project has resulted in opening the collections and services of Fullerton College, Cypress College, Golden West and Orange Coast College libraries to all staff and students of these institutions. We also serve members of the Alumni Association, the Emeritus Institute, and the Friends of the Library.
