OCC’s “The Box” Kicks Off Fall Lineup with a Week of Workshops Led by Paul Frank

​Orange Coast College's Fashion department is bringing back its on-campus pop-up retail shop, The Box — located in a shipping container between Literature and Languages and the Math, Business and Computing Center – with a weeklong showcase of OCC alumnus and fashion instructor Paul Frank.

The multi-day event — titled "P.F. Workshop Designed by Paul Frank" — will include a group chat on Oct. 1 from 1–2 p.m. that discusses visual displays and materials, and a keychain workshop on Oct. 3 from 3–5 p.m. (there is a $5 fee for the keychain workshop).

Frank is best known as the founder and creative genius behind his eponymous brand, Paul Frank Industries, which he started from his Huntington Beach garage in the 1990s around the same time he took fashion and art classes at OCC. In the nearly three decades since, Frank's whimsical characters have become known worldwide, with sales of t-shirts, wallets, and countless other accessories topping $40 million in the early 2000s.

Determined to give back and mentor the next generation of fashion designers, Frank has spent years as an instructor at Coast, often taking on interns from the College's fashion department.

As the College celebrates its 70th Anniversary, fashion students and faculty felt it was important to honor one of its most accomplished alums.

"We were excited to invite P.F. Workshop Designed by Paul Frank for the grand opening of the Box for Fall 2018 and in celebration of OCC's 70th year anniversary," says fashion instructor Michelle Craner. "The Workshop Experience is a museum-like tribute to Paul Frank's journey starting at OCC."

Frank also recently released a new children's book that he published alongside OCC alumni and instructor Trevor McDonald and Parker Jacobs, titled "She Loves Me."

The Box project is part of a Statewide grant titled "Doing What Matters for Jobs and the Economy" that challenges community colleges to come up with innovative ways to give students hands-on, real-world learning experiences.

The one-year project will be open at various points during the Fall 2018 semester and will showcase several brands and retailers, including Vans from Oct. 22–25, 5.11 Tactical from Nov. 5–8, Crossroads from Nov. 26–29, and Known Supply from December 3–6. Each brand will be given free rein over the empty shipping container and will bring in their own look with unique furniture and artwork.

Many students from OCC's Fashion department were involved in the development of The Box; everything from designing the logo to booking local brands was undertaken by fashion students as part of a laboratory type class.

The P.F. Workshop Experience Designed by Paul Frank will include the following events, open to students, faculty, staff and the public:


Oct. 1–4 — P.F. Workshop Experience, 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Oct. 1 — Group Chat, Visual Display & Materials, 1–2 p.m. *location CS&D 202

Oct. 3 — Keychain Workshop ($5), 3–5 p.m.

Oct. 3 — Group Chat, OCC Alumni, 6 p.m.
