Guardian Scholars Receives State Grant

Led by Orange Coast College’s Guardian Scholars Program, Coast Community College District, applied for a highly competitive state-funded grant for the expansion of foster youth services at all three colleges and was one of just ten districts in the state selected. The goal to strengthen the capacity of community college districts to support higher education success, health and well-being of many of nearly 13,000 current and former foster youth currently enrolled in California’s community colleges. Funding is made possible by Senate Bill 1023, which addresses disproportionately low rates of educational attainment these students face. The awarded amount has yet to be announced but may be as much as $2 million for the district. These monies will be used to fund t development and increase of services at OCC, GWC, and Coastline, including new staff members, increasing direct student services like textbook awards, bus passes, and a greater emphasis on mental health support. Gabrielle Ridley, Guardian Scholars Program Coordinator, stated, “OCC’s program, currently assists 84 students, and expected to grow more than 100 during the course of this pilot program, modeling and serving as first point of contact for the district. We are very excited about this opportunity!”
