The Learning Center

The learning disabilities program offers students with learning disabilities educational assessment, support services and assistance with educational planning. Students who believe they have a learning disability should contact a staff member to schedule an intake appointment. Diagnostic testing may be administered to determine eligibility and to develop an educational plan for academic success. It is important that you start this process before you need accommodations in your classes since it involves three to four appointments with four to six hours of assessment to determine eligibility for services. Support services may include specialized tutoring, special courses, accommodated testing, books on tape and/or liaison with instructors and counselors.

What is the Learning Center?

The Orange Coast College Learning Center is a Special Services program that was initiated in 1975. It is designed to assist students who have been identified as having a learning disability and who demonstrate specific learning problems in the academic skill areas of reading, writing, spelling and mathematics. The Learning Center also provides a variety of support services.
Each student's learning disability is evaluated by members of the Learning Center staff. To be eligible for services, students must meet a set of state standards that involve achievement scores, intellectual ability scores and processing deficits.
Individualized remedial programs are developed which include a wide variety of teaching materials and techniques. Once a student is enrolled in the program, he or she may earn one to three units of credit per semester. (Students may enter the program at any time during the semester).

What services are provided in the Learning Center?
