Orange Coast College’s Fashion department will welcome Newport Beach-based brand “The Standard Stitch” to campus next week as a featured brand in The Box, a pop-up shop housed in a shipping container near the College’s Chemistry building.
The Standard Stitch will set up shop from October 10 until October 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. They will sell their most recent collection of essentials and loungewear, as well as host a clothing drive that will benefit OCC’s food and clothing pantry, the Pirates’ Cove.
“The average person throws away 81 pounds of clothes every year,” says The Standard Stitch founder Alana Schmidt. “We’re excited to team up with Pirates’ Cove to give clothing a second life and avoid adding to landfills.”
The Standard Stitch will be taking donations every day at The Box, and students are encouraged to bring lightly used, in-season and in-style clothing.
The Standard Stitch also is partnering with OCC’s Makerspace to offer free onsite embroidery on any purchased item. “We recognize that so much time and effort goes into making clothing,” says Schmidt. “We wanted to partner with the Makerspace to highlight that there are people behind every step of our clothes, even the smallest details.”
On Monday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. Schmidt will join OCC Fashion Sustainability teacher Laura Bonell for a Power Hour at The Box, where they will discuss what sustainability means in the apparel industry.
