April 26 Event Highlights Coastal Conservation and Maritime Stewardship
The Orange Coast College Planetarium and the Dennis Kelly Aquarium will host an Earth Day Celebration of our Coastal Environment on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This free event aims to highlight the importance of coastal conservation and celebrates the Port of Long Beach’s commitment to responsible maritime activities and environmental stewardship.
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities that showcase the unique ecosystems and maritime connections of our Southern California coastline. At the OCC Aquarium, guests can enjoy guided tours of the student-run facility featuring local marine species, an interactive touch tank, and engaging activities focused on bathymetry, coastal navigation, and the vital role of the port in our regional economy.
At the OCC Planetarium, guests can enjoy free showings of “Habitat Earth,” an immersive dome film that explores the interconnected systems that support life on our planet. Showtimes will occur every 35 minutes, beginning at 10:15 a.m., with a special Spanish-language presentation at 11:25 a.m. Throughout the event, guests can discover global trade routes on our Science on a Sphere interactive globe, view the sun through solar telescopes, and explore maritime navigation through touch-screen displays.
“The OCC Aquarium is excited to partner with the Planetarium with the support of the Port of Long Beach to showcase our local tidelands and increase community awareness of our coastal resources and marine life,” says OCC Aquarium Director Mary Blasius. “We look forward to community members getting a chance to interact with our aquarium science students that help manage the student-run Dennis Kelly Public Aquarium.”
This Earth Day celebration, sponsored by the Port of Long Beach, is perfect for individuals of all ages who are passionate about marine life, curious about astronomy, or interested in the careers that sustain our oceans and coastlines. Free parking will be available in Lot E.
