Orange Coast College’s Horticulture Department will host its third annual Marigold Sale on the last two Fridays in October — October 24 and October 31 — from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. This event leads up to Día de Muertos, a cherished holiday dedicated to honoring and remembering loved ones who have passed away.
The Horticulture Department at OCC is renowned for its annual plant sales, typically held each semester. For this marigold sale, the department will have face painting and an ofrenda to honor loved ones who have passed on.
Día de Muertos, celebrated annually on November 1 and 2, holds cultural significance throughout Mexico and Latin America. The marigold flower, known as cempasúchil, is traditionally used to decorate ofrendas (altars), providing a vibrant tribute to those who have departed.
The event is free to the general public. The marigolds are in one-gallon pots and priced at $7 per plant. All proceeds generated from the sale will go toward student scholarships and projects.
