Orange Coast College’s Horticulture Department will host a Marigold Sale on Friday, Oct. 27, to celebrate Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The Horticulture Department at Coast is renowned for its annual plant sales typically held each semester. This will mark the first year that the department will host a marigold sale, which comes just in time for Día de los Muertos.

The holiday honors and remembers deceased loved ones and is celebrated annually in Mexico and throughout Latin America, typically on November 1 and 2. The marigold flower, or cempasúchil, is native to Mexico and is traditionally used to adorn ofrendas (alters) built by family members of the deceased.

The event is free to the general public. The marigolds are in 6.5 in. pots priced at $5 per plant. All proceeds will go toward student scholarships and projects. Visit OCC Horticulture Department website for more information.
