Next week marks the start of
Black Student Success Week, an annual event hosted by the State Chancellor's Office. This year's theme, “Lift Up, Level Up: The Rise of Black Serving Institutions,” emphasizes innovative approaches to supporting underserved students, including but not limited to Black and African American students, in achieving success in community colleges.
At Orange Coast College, we recognize the importance of fostering an environment that promotes connection, engagement, and a true sense of belonging and community among our students. The Umoja Program at OCC is an example of program dedicated to serving our students with an emphasis on the African and African American experience through culturally responsive curriculum and practices.
On Monday, OCC’s Black Student Union will host an event titled "Lift Up. Period. Level Up. Period." from 1 to 3 p.m. in College Center Ballroom A. This event will celebrate and uplift Black student success by fostering a sense of community, providing valuable insights from accomplished professionals, and offering networking opportunities for our students.
My appreciation to the classified professionals, faculty, and administrators who contribute tirelessly to creating a culture of belonging for our students at Orange Coast College.
