  Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

  Does the ADA apply to schools and colleges?

  Title II of the ADA of 1990 prohibits discrimination based on disability by public entities and applies to any public educational institution. The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is responsible for enforcing the ADA provisions with respect to public educational entities and public libraries. OCR also enforces Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as it applies to educational institutions.

  On April 24, 2024, the Federal Register published the Department of Justice’s (Department) final rule updating its regulations for Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The final rule has specific requirements about how to make sure that web content and mobile applications (apps) are accessible to people with disabilities. Deadline for compliance for large community institutions is April 24, 2026.
