Frequently Asked Questions - Housing Immunization

• Is the COVID-19 Vaccine required?
  • No, COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters are strongly encouraged, but not required.
• I received the COVID-19 Vaccine, how long do I have to wait to receive an MMR, Meningitis, Varicella, Tdap or Flu vaccine?
  • You must wait a minimum of 14 days before obtaining any other vaccines.
  • You must wait 28 days before doing a TB test. It is recommended to do TB testing, if needed, before getting a COVID vaccine.

• I got individual doses of Measles, Mumps, and Rubella, is that still sufficient?

  • Yes, if each dosage was after your first birthday and you received two dosages of each

• I got the first dosage of MMR before my first birthday, what do I do?

  • You have the option of either checking your titers or receiving a third dosage.

• If I had Chicken Pox as a child does that mean I am cleared for the Varicella recommendation?

  • No, even if you had Chicken Pox as a child, you still should get a titer to prove immunity to the disease.

• I only got the titer for Varicella, is that sufficient?

  • Yes, if the titer is positive, that will satisfy the Varicella immunity recommendation.

• I got the first dose of Varicella before my first birthday, what do I do?

  • You have the option of either checking your titer or receiving a third dosage of Varicella vaccine.

• I got Td/DTP/DTaP, does that satisfy the Pertussis recommendation?

  • No. To satisfy the recommendation, you must have received Tdap on or after the age of 7. A DTaP vaccination is a pediatric vaccine that is neither approved nor recommended for persons older age 6 except in rare situations.

• Do you allow titers for Tdap?

  • No, we only accept the vaccine on or after the age of 7.

• I got Tdap before my 7th birthday, what do I do?

  • You will need to get another Tdap vaccine to satisfy the recommendation.

• I got Meningococcal B, Trumenba, or Bexsero does that satisfy the recommendation?

  • No. If you are 21 or younger, you should receive a dose of Menactra or Menveo (Meningococcal ACWY/MCV4) on or after the age of 16.

• Do you allow titers for Meningococcal ACWY?

  • No. We only accept proof of the vaccine on or after the age of 16.

• I got the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine before my 16th birthday, what do I do?

  • If you are 21 years old or younger, you will need another dose of the Meningococcal vaccine to satisfy the recommendation.

• I am over the age of 21, do I need to get the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine?

  • No, you are not required to provide proof of the vaccine. However, it is highly recommended for all students living in on-campus housing. Please view: What you should know about meningococcal disease and Meningococcal Disease Outbreaks.

• Is the TB screening mandatory?

  • No, but it is highly recommended.

• I did the TB Risk assessment and need further testing. Can I get a TB test at the Student Health Center? 

  • Yes, for a fee and by appointment only, please call the Student Health Center at 714.714.7705 for an appointment.

• I did a Tuberculosis skin test/TB Quantiferon Gold/Chest X-Ray in the past; do I still have to complete the Tuberculosis Risk Assessment in the Student Health Portal?

  • All incoming residents are highly recommended to complete the Tuberculosis Risk Assessment form in the Student Health Portal. This will determine if a TB test is needed.

• Can I get my vaccines done at the Student Health Center?

  • No, the Student Health Center does not offer any vaccines besides Flu. We can only offer blood tests called titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, and Tuberculosis for a fee. Please call your insurance, primary medical doctor, or the Student Health Center at (714) 714-7705 for vaccine referrals and/or titers.

• Housing Immunization records should be uploaded to the Health Portal to verify proof of vaccines. Both the records AND the completed forms are needed to provide health clearances. Upload immunization records and TB records at the bottom of the 4.OCC Housing Immunizations form on the Health Portal. If possible, please try to group files together in a PDF to have fewer uploads.

No. To ensure that proper documentation is provided, please log in to our secure Student Health Portal and complete the forms labeled "4. OCC Housing Immunizations." Please upload your supporting documents for verification.

Yes, please submit your records in English. Records need to be translated using an official service or by a medical provider. If we cannot interpret your records, you may need to take further steps, such as getting laboratory tests to show proof of immunity (titers) at OCC Student Health Center or immunizations with an outside medical provider. Please note that titers will only be accepted for MMR and Varicella (if applicable).
