Black History Month Parade & Cultural Fair

Time: 10am-4pm

Location: Downtown Anaheim 

Coastline, Orange Coast, Goldenwest College and the Umoja Community will be participating in the Annual OC Black History Month Parade & Culture Faire in Downtown Anaheim.  

As the only black heritage parade in the county, the event showcases Anaheim's and Orange County's culturally rich African American community. Did you know this yearly event brings some 8,000 people together to mark the contributions of African Americans to Anaheim and the county? Come be part of this greatness!  

Parade is at 10am. The Unity Festival, with booths from local businesses and colleges, starts at Noon. 

BLACK COLLEGE EXPO and Battle of the Bands

The 26th Annual LA Black College Expo is happening. Students have the chance to get accepted on the spot, receive scholarships and get all your questions answered. This event is open to parents, students, and families. Battle of the Bands will feature host Nick Cannon and HBCU Marching Bands from Alabama State University, North Carolina A&T, Hampton University, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Southern University and A&M College, and Alabama A&M University.   Mark your calendars and get ready for a day filled with inspiration, information, and endless possibilities!

Join us for a powerful and courageous conversation feature Ken E. Nwadike Jr. Ken is a peace activist, motivational speaker and video journalist.  Well-known as the Free Hugs Guy online, Ken uses video and live performance to spread love, inspire change and raise awareness of social issues. His postings have reached hundreds of millions of people on Facebook and YouTube. He founded the Hollywood Half-Marathon to help the homeless after overcoming homelessness himself as a student athlete. He risked his life on the frontlines of protests across the nation, de-escalating violence in the midst of intense anger. His engagements foster belonging by developing positive connections and human interaction. Light refreshments served.

Join us for an unforgettable afternoon of original student poetry and spoken word, featuring the live music of Dr. Ron McCurdy and the Langston Hughes Project. This dynamic performance brings Langston Hughes’ poetic masterpieces along with our students' original poetry to life with a live musical band, blending Hughes’ and the students’ words with captivating music and visuals. Together, the poetry, music, and visuals create a powerful and immersive experience that bridges the Harlem Renaissance, the post-World War II Beat era’s coffeehouse jazz poetry,  the transformative Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and current social justice issues of today in an inspiring creative and artistic expression. Also to include an impeccable lunch featuring the best of African American traditional soul food and desserts.

Join us for a dynamic and interactive discussion with Dr. Chike Akua. Dr. Akua is a former Teacher of the Year who has been recognized in two states (VA and GA) for teaching excellence. He was also selected as one of Ebony magazine’s “50 Leaders of Tomorrow” a distinction he is living up to today. Deeply committed to culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy and instructional materials, Dr. Akua has written and published several books and parent/teacher guides designed for today’s students. The book, Honoring Our Ancestral Obligations: 7 Steps to Black Student Success is also used at a number of higher schools, colleges and universities for students and those who serve them.   Dr. Akua is frequently called upon by education, civic, and social organizations to speak about educational excellence and cultural knowledge. He is an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at Clark Atlanta University. As a recognized master teacher and leadership strategist, Dr. Akua is one of the most sought-after speakers at regional and national conferences, urban school districts, colleges and universities.  Light refreshments served. 

 

 

The A²MEND’s mission is to work to ensure the interest and success of African American students, faculty, staff and administrators at California’s community colleges. A²MEND educators utilize their scholarly and professional expertise to foster institutional change within the community college system to increase success of African American male students.

This is the annual conference where hundreds of African American or African descent college male students come to gather for empowerment and engagement from a network of African-American male educators in the state of California including dynamic speakers and breakout sessions.

Join Umoja and BSU for a fun game night. We will be planning Jeopardy all focused on Black History and culture! This isn't your normal Jeopardy, but has a fun twist. Game night starts at 5:30pm in the Student Union Rm. 213. Light refreshments will be served.

Did you know that Mansa Musa is still considered the wealthiest man that ever lived? Come and learn about his life and legacy as we explore his amazing story as leader of the Mali Empire.  Get ready to be inspired to discover ways to develop business and build wealth.

Bettie Mae Fikes, a.k.a ‘the voice of Selma’, is a celebrated icon of the 1960’s civil rights movement who has since sustained her public activity by frequently performing as a core member of the SNCC Freedom Singers and has graced the stages of Carnegie Hall, the Newport Jazz Festival and the Library of Congress. She is a recipient of the Long Walk to Freedom Award, and has recently been inducted into the Smithsonian Institute’s ‘Museum of Tolerance’ in an exhibition honoring women of the Civil Rights
Movement. Bettie is also a dynamic lecturer, having delivered moving speeches about diversity and civil rights at universities throughout the United States and Canada. Her message is universal, timely and timelessly transgenerational. You don't want to miss this event! Light refreshments will be served

The HBCU Spring Break Tour is designed to provide students the opportunity to explore other transfer opportunities outside of California and expose students to the rich legacy and culture of HBCUs. All airfare, hotel, travel, and meals will be covered on this tour. University visits include, Howard University, Hampton University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Virginia State University, Bowie State University, and Morgan State University including museum tours.

The symposium serves as a dynamic platform for collaborative learning and growth. Each regional event encompasses a rich array of activities, including workshop sessions, engagement with four-year universities, connection to the African Diaspora, cross-regional support, and alliance building This year's southern California regional symposium will be held at UC Irvine on Thursday, April 4th from 9am - 4pm. Transportation will be provided from OCC to UC Irvine. All new students to Umoja are welcome to attend!
