The OC Black History Parade & Unity Festival is amazing event for everyone to join in celebrating Black History with a parade and unity festival immediately following. Coastline, Orange Coast, Goldenwest College and the Umoja Community will be participating and we want to see you there! 

As the only black heritage parade in the county, the event showcases Anaheim's and Orange County's culturally rich African American community. Did you know this yearly event brings some 8,000 people together to mark the contributions of African Americans to Anaheim and the county? Come be part of this greatness!  

 Parade is at 10am. The Unity Festival, with booths from local businesses and colleges, starts at Noon. 

Join Umoja and BSU for a fun game night. We will be planning Jeopardy all focused on Black History and culture! This isn't your normal Jeopardy, but has a fun twist. Game night starts at 5:30pm in the Student Union Rm. 213. Light refreshments will be served.

Did you know that Mansa Musa is still considered the wealthiest man that ever lived? Come and learn about his life and legacy as we explore his amazing story as leader of the Mali Empire.  Get ready to be inspired to discover ways to develop business and build wealth.

Bettie Mae Fikes, a.k.a ‘the voice of Selma’, is a celebrated icon of the 1960’s civil rights movement who has since sustained her public activity by frequently performing as a core member of the SNCC Freedom Singers and has graced the stages of Carnegie Hall, the Newport Jazz Festival and the Library of Congress. She is a recipient of the Long Walk to Freedom Award, and has recently been inducted into the Smithsonian Institute’s ‘Museum of Tolerance’ in an exhibition honoring women of the Civil Rights
Movement. Bettie is also a dynamic lecturer, having delivered moving speeches about diversity and civil rights at universities throughout the United States and Canada. Her message is universal, timely and timelessly transgenerational. You don't want to miss this event! Light refreshments will be served

Did you know that you can transfer to an HBCU with guaranteed admissions? Did you know that fall 2024 HBCU transfer students will be eligible for a $5,000 scholarship? Come and learn all about the opportunities available at HBCUs and the rich legacy of these institutions. Light refreshments will be served.

The A²MEND’s mission is to work to ensure the interest and success of African American students, faculty, staff and administrators at California’s community colleges. A²MEND educators utilize their scholarly and professional expertise to foster institutional change within the community college system to increase success of African American male students.

This is the annual conference where hundreds of African American or African descent college male students come to gather for empowerment and engagement from a network of African-American male educators in the state of California including dynamic speakers and breakout sessions. Umoja students that are intersted need to sign-up in Canvas. Space is limited. 

The HBCU Spring Break Tour is designed to provide students the opportunity to explore other transfer opportunities outside of California and expose students to the rich legacy and culture of HBCUs. All airfare, hotel, travel, and meals will be covered on this tour. University visits include, Howard University, Hampton University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Virginia State University, Bowie State University, and Morgan State University including museum tours.

The symposium serves as a dynamic platform for collaborative learning and growth. Each regional event encompasses a rich array of activities, including workshop sessions, engagement with four-year universities, connection to the African Diaspora, cross-regional support, and alliance building This year's southern California regional symposium will be held at UC Irvine on Thursday, April 4th from 9am - 4pm. Transportation will be provided from OCC to UC Irvine. All new students to Umoja are welcome to attend!

The CCCD Umoja Programs in collaboration with OCC BSU will be hosting a Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration. Join us and learn why this cultural celebration is important to the African American community.

Celebrating African Dance -  Dr. Jewel Jackson an author, consultant and Founder & Director of African Soul International, who will perform and showcase West African Dance in commemorating BH month. Dr. Jackson and her team will perform and share insights to African dance and drumming and its connection to African American culture today. This will be an interactive show that the entire audience will have an opportunity to participate in with a call and response tradition. This presentation will take place in the campus quad to invite the entire campus community to share in the energy and joy of African Dance. 

This event is centered around the Umoja practice: Awareness of Connectedness to African Diaspora

 

Celebrating Black Creativity through Artistic Voices -  Brandon Alexander Williams is a Hip Hop Instructor, Published Author, All Def Poetry and Spoken Word Artist, MC, and DJ who will provide a 2 part presentation that showcases his Spoken Word and Artistic background, Self-publishing tips and empower students to use their voice and lived experiences in creative writing expressive forms that can reimagine how they view college writing and inform them of ways to turn their artistry into self-published books.

Celebrating Black Businesses - De'Von Truvel is the creator of Black Wall Street the Board Game and 4 -time author. De'Von will provide a presentation about Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma to include information about economics, wealth building, Q & A Session, and 3 Black Wall Street Board Games for free raffle.

Celebrating Black Legacy - Dr. Ron McCurdy, is a Professor of Music at the USC Thornton School of Music. His presentation is focused on Disrupting Racism Through the Lens of Langston Hughes. The Langston Hughes Project is based on Hughes' poem, Ask Your Mama:12 Moods for Jazz. It celebrates Hughes' social commentary on the struggle for Freedom and Equality among Africans and African Americans in the 1960s. He will show the connection between how African Americans use their artistry to disrupt racism in the past and present day.
