Explore, experiment, and discover with STEM Explorers at the OCC Planetarium!
Designed for curious young scientists, our STEM Explorers programs introduce science, technology, engineering, and math through fun, hands-on activities. Each event features a different theme and gives participants the opportunity to experiment, build, create, and investigate the science behind the world around them.
From rockets and robotics to chemistry, electricity, astronomy, marine science, and more, STEM Explorers encourages kids to ask questions, solve problems, and discover just how much fun STEM can be!
Spooky Science Lab
October 24 9AM-12PM
Get ready for some spooktacular science!
Young scientists ages 8–11 are invited to explore the spooky side of STEM through hands-on experiments and activities. Make your own ooey-gooey slime, discover the shocking science of static electricity, and build electrical circuits to see how electricity flows.
It’s an afternoon of creepy, curious, hands-on science perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit!
Please send them with a refillable water bottle and a snack!

Coral Reef Habitats
November 7 9AM-12PM
Join us for a hands-on STEM adventure beneath the waves as we explore the fascinating world of coral reefs! Young explorers ages 7–10 will discover how corals create habitats for thousands of marine species and why healthy coral reefs are so important to our oceans.
Throughout the experience, students will rotate through interactive activities that combine marine science, engineering, and creativity. They’ll investigate what makes a coral reef a living ecosystem, explore coral anatomy and biodiversity, and take on STEM challenges inspired by the structures and adaptations found on a reef.
Potential Activities:
- Coral Close-Up Investigation – Students will examine bleached coral specimens and make observations.
- Who Lives on the Reef? –Students will investigate reef biodiversity and learn how different organisms depend on one another. Look at our Tropical tanks such as Lagoon, Coral Prop, and MAYBE coral holding in Storage.
- Reef in a Changing Ocean – Participate in a hands-on activity demonstrating how environmental changes can affect coral reefs. Ocean Acidification Demo?
- Class Coral Reef– Each explorer designs and creates a reef organism. All of the individual creations are combined into one large community reef artwork to be displayed at the aquarium.
