The lush Amazon River, nestled in the heart of the rainforest, is home to millions of freshwater fish, one of these being the Symphysodon cichlid, which we colloquially known as Discus. These flat-bodied fish are found schooling around submerged tree roots in the tinted water of sheltered source-rivers such as the Rio Negro that feed the main Amazon channel. Discus are sensitive fish that are difficult to keep in the home aquarium due to their strict water quality needs, namely a low pH and high temperature environment.
