- Course Repetition - Repeat a course in which a “D” or “F” was received. After the course has been repeated, the past grade will be excluded from GPA calculation and the most recent grade will be included (if taken within the district). If you have retaken the equivalent course outside the district, then please scroll down to submit the "Petition to Exclude a Sub-standard Grade."
- Academic Renewal - The purpose of this policy is to disregard past substandard academic performance of students when such work is not reflective of their current demonstrated ability. To discuss the option to petition for Academic Renewal, please schedule an appointment with a counselor. If students are found eligible, “D” and “F” grades listed on their petition will be disregarded from their GPA.
Repeat Courses
Students, who have received a sub-standard grade (D or F) in a course may repeat the course and the sub-standard grade will be excluded from their Grade Point Average (GPA).
Course Repeated Within the Coast District
Students may repeat the course at Orange Coast College or an equivalent course taken within the Coast District (Coastline College or Golden West College). The grade earned for the repeated course will be included in their GPA calculation and the prior attempt will be excluded from the GPA calculation. The grade from the prior attempt will still appear on the student's official transcript with a notation that the grade is excluded from the GPA calculation.
Course Repeated Outside of the Coast District
Students that complete an equivalent course outside of the Coast District may petition to have the sub-standard grade “excluded” from their grade point average (GPA). In order to qualify for an exclusion of a sub-standard grade:
- The course must be retaken at a regionally accredited college or university.
- The course must be evaluated for equivalency to the OCC course.
- The student must submit a Petition to Exclude a Sub-standard Grade (PDF) along with an official transcript from the college or university to the Enrollment Center. The form can be emailed to arinfo@occ.cccd.edu. We also recommend that official transcripts be sent electronically to OCCTranscripts@occ.cccd.edu (the transcripts must be sent directly from the sending institution's authorized agent. OCC will not accept forwarded transcripts from the student)
The grade from the prior attempt will still appear on the student's official transcript with a notation that the grade is excluded from the GPA calculation. Please allow up tp 5-10 business days for processing; once processed, the student will be notified via email.
GWC and Coastline Records
Students who need to exclude sub-standard grades at Golden West College or Coastline Community College, must reach out to each respective school's admission office. The Petition to Exclude a Sub-Standard Grade form linked above is for OCC grades only.
