Medical Care at OCC

Services

• Diagnosis & Treatment of Illness or Injury

  A registered nurse will assess the condition or problem, and will either make an appointment for the student to see the medical provider or make a referral for an appropriate health care resource in our local community. 

• Sexual/Reproductive Health

  We offer gynecological services, including gynecologic examinations, clinical breast exams, contraceptives, pregnancy tests, bladder/urinary tract infection testing, low cost STI testing, pap smears and referrals to other health professionals if necessary.

  Men’s Health care is provided, including free condoms, low cost physical exams, low cost STI testing, testicular cancer screenings (testicular exam), prostate cancer screening, and other health issues.

• Immunizations

  The Student Health Center provides free flu vaccine annually.  The vaccine is provided to Orange Coast College students by the Student Health Center at no cost. Students requesting immunizations, such as Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccines will be referred to a local health department or pharmacy.

  There is no general immunization requirement to attend OCC. However, various academic programs require proof of immunization status. The Student Health Center nursing staff is available to consult with students regarding immunization requirements for OCC programs.  

  The Harbour on-campus Housing students are highly recommended to provide their immunization status and complete all immunizations by October 1st. Please view Housing students immunization recommendations. 

• Tuberculosis (TB) Testing

  $15 TB skin tests for Students

  $25 TB skin tests/assessments for Staff

  $54 TB QuantiFERON/IGRA testing for Students (will be sent to outside lab)

• Low Cost Laboratory Testing & Medications

  The Student Health Center offers rapid "point-of-care" lab tests, including urinalysis, pregnancy testing, strep, COVID and flu.  These tests are performed in the Health Center.  Our medical providers may also order a limited selection of outside laboratory tests. All outside laboratory tests must be paid to the Student Health Center before going to the lab.  The Student Health Center does not bill health insurance, thus, are out of pocket expenses for the student.

  Medications may be ordered by our medical providers and purchased in the office or can be sent to your pharmacy of choice and filled using your health insurance or out of pocket.

• Program Physicals
  Appointments are required, no walk-ins allowed. We do NOT accept health insurance for the physicals nor any required tests.
  

  • $10 Health Screening
  • $30 Athletic/Sports Physical
    • Please bring your physical form printed out to your appointment and fill out the medical history portion of the form in black ink.
  • $35+ Allied Health Physical
    • Students may need two to five visits over a span of two weeks to complete all physical exam items. Labwork such as titers are contracted to an outside provider. We do NOT provide any vaccines except the Flu Vaccine. See our AHPE Process [PDF] for pricing and more information.
    • Please do NOT get any vaccines such as MMR or Varicella until after your TB test, doing so will delay your clearance. 
    • Please bring your physical form printed out to your appointment.
    • Please bring your immunization records printed out to your appointment or upload them to our Health Portal
• Campus Injuries

  For an emergency on campus, call Campus Public Safety at 714-432-5555.

  The Coast Community College District maintains a general liability insurance policy that covers medical care for accidents and injuries that occur on district property. Examples could include student athletes who sustain injuries as a result of team practice or play, or a culinary student who cuts their finger.  Allied Health students who are injured at a clinical site are usually covered by worker's compensation through the clinical site, and should check with their clinical instructor for further instructions.

  If students are injured on campus or during participation in campus sponsored activities, they must fill out insurance forms with their Athletic Coach or the Student Health Center within 72 hours of the accident to access the student accident insurance.  If it is not possible to fill out the forms within 72 hours, please go to the health center as soon as possible to complete this paperwork.

  The policy is valid for one year from the date of injury. In order to be eligible for benefits, the student must be treated for the injury within 120 days from the date of injury. To be covered at 100%, the student must seek treatment from an Anthem Blue Cross PPO Provider.  For additional information regarding student accident insurance, please view Student Insurance USA.  

  Note: The student accident policy is secondary to any primary insurance policy covering an injured student, except when the student's primary insurance is Medi-Cal.

General Information

• Confidentiality and Mandated Reporting

  All medical records are confidential and information will not be disclosed without your written permission EXCEPT by court order, subpoena, or where reporting is required by law such as:

  • When the patient may harm themselves or others.
  • When there is reasonable suspicion or knowledge of domestic violence including sexual assault, child abuse, spousal abuse, or abuse of the elderly or dependent adult.
  • When there is an injury as a result of violence, suspected violence, or animal contact.
  • When a reportable communicable disease is suspected or diagnosed.
• Excuse Notes or Letters

  The Student Health Center does not issue medical excuses for previously missed classes or work. Students are responsible for contacting their professor or employer if too ill to attend class or work. Most illness and absence circumstances are best worked out between the student and the instructor. Students are encouraged to contact their health care provider, and contract their professor(s) promptly if they have missed class/assignments due to illness, injury or other unforeseen events to discuss potential solutions.  

  If you need to drop or withdraw from your courses due to medical reasons, please follow the standard withdrawal procedure through the Enrollment Center. International students should contact the Global Engagement Center.

• Primary Care, Chronic Conditions, Work Related Injuries
  The Student Health Center does not provide medical management of injuries due to work injuries, nor chronic health conditions that require daily medication (such as diabetes, cardiac conditions, hypertension, etc.)  Our nurses can help students find primary care resources in our local community that provide management of chronic medical conditions.
• Care for Minors (Age 17 and younger)
  Minors, aged 17 and younger, may need to have a minor consent form completed by their legal guardian in order to receive medical services.
